USM Education Ambassador (EA) Community Enrichment program is an initiative by the Advanced Medical & Dental Institute (AMDI) to provide quality education, personalized or small group tuition for underprivileged students from our local community. This program is also a collaboration with Tzu Chi Penang, SK Padang Tembak and SMK Bagan Jaya. The aim of the program is to provide equal and quality education opportunities to underprivileged & B40 students who falling behind in school. EA's role is to build their interest and boost their confidence level in learning. This program also bridges university students to local communities by cultivating the spirit of community service and volunteerism through real-life practices.
To alleviate poverty in local region, narrow the gap between the rich and poor.
To increase the sense of community service and volunteerism among USM students.
To provide equal opportunities for quality education and enhance educational level to disadvantaged children and teenagers.
To create a bridge between university students and underprivileged communities.
To cultivate and develop a good moral character and conscience with high accountability, and contribute to society.
The EA program welcomes all USM students and also any other university/college students or adults with a passion to motivate and assist children in their learning.
We highly encourage personalized teaching based on the studies by Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer - the Novel Prize laureates in economic sciences in 2019 where they discovered new ways of fighting poverty. Field experiments showed that more textbooks and free school meals have little effects on children’s learning outcome. They found targeted coaching for weak students significantly improved educational outcomes. Through targeted or personalized teaching, we are able to adapt to a leaner’s need and adjust the level of difficulty according to each person’s ability. By allocating teaching assistants to support children with different needs, the school results were improved for both short and medium term outcomes [1].
