Overview

This workshop will be virtual. A kickoff meeting (12 noon Eastern Time February 9, 2022) will be followed by a series of smaller breakout discussions, then a final meeting in May. Participants can expect to commit <40 hours in total.

Connection instructions will be sent to all registered participants in advance of the kickoff meeting.

Based on the charge, the workshop format is structured to answer this list of Discussion Group Questions.

Roles

Participants
Participate in Kickoff, Regroup, and Final Meetings, Topical Breakout Discussions, and Mixed Breakout Discussions. You can also get involved by submitting White Papers or Comments.

Discussion Leaders
We will appoint discussion leaders for the Topical and Mixed Groups. Discussion leaders will coordinate meetings, guide groups to answer questions related to the workshop charge, read & ensure relevant white papers are incorporated into discussions, and ensure that results of group discussions are communicated with co-chairs.

Scribes
Each discussion meeting should have a scribe. Scribes will record notes and summaries from group discussions in a shared document.

Chairs (Chuck Greenfield & Cami Collins)
The workshop chairs will gather input from breakout discussions and summarize the results of the workshop in a report that will be submitted to DOE FES. At our final meeting, the community will have the opportunity to review, discuss, and help to improve a draft of that report.

Final Meeting

  • The draft report will be presented.

  • The final meeting will focus on the organizational aspects of the report, which are Chapter 3 (The US ITER Research Program) and Chapter 4 (Mobilizing a US ITER Research Workforce).

  • Workshop participants will discuss the report in breakout groups during the final meeting.

  1. Thank you to those who filled out the scheduling form. We have tried to assign you to a group/meeting time that fits your schedule. Participants who did not fill out the form were assigned randomly. Discussion groups are a mix of topical expertise.

  2. Discussion group leaders will send out meeting connection information for nominally 3 recurring meetings to address Discussion Group Questions on organizational aspects of US ITER Research:
    Week of March 28....    (Q3)
    Week of April 11....    (Q4)
    Week of April 25....    (Q5 + Q6)

  3. Scribes will record notes in the Discussion Group Notes shared google drive.

  4. After each breakout discussion, a group representative (discussion lead, scribe, or other) will be asked to meet with the workshop chairs to share the main results of the discussions.

Topical Breakout Discussion

  2. Topical Groups will address Discussion Group Questions Q1 & Q2, focusing on technical aspects from the point of view of their topical area.

  3. Scribes will record notes in the Discussion Group Notes shared google drive.

  4. After each breakout discussion, a group representative (discussion lead, scribe, or other) will be asked to meet with the workshop chairs to share the main results of the discussions.

    (includes magnets, heating & current drive (such as Electron & Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating sources & transmission), b    lanket, tritium, and fueling systems, auxiliary systems & controls (such as tokamak cooling water system, vacuum auxiliary systems, electrical network), data acquisition, integrated plasma core and plant control, remote maintenance, licensing)

White Papers

Due Feb 11 or March 25

We invite community input in the form of white papers that respond to the charge for this workshop. Papers will be used in discussion groups and contribute to the workshop report .

We are hoping to receive (hopefully a small number of) white papers that work towards building multi-institutional consensus on how a US ITER research program should be organized. These papers would provide a starting point for discussion groups in March.
