The project draws its name from Usiru in Kannada which means Breath or Breathe
At the end of 2018, India had the dubious distinction of having 12 of the 15 most polluted cities in the world. This was based on a study of PM 2.5
Project Urishu is driven by a collective of concerned companies with able piloting by IoTForum. Project Usiru's aim is to use new methods and technologies to establish improved Air Quality in India
India’s National Air Quality Index from the National Ambient Air Quality Standards is a tool that transforms complex air quality data of various pollutants into a single number (index value), nomenclature and colour. The AQ sub-index and health breakpoints are evolved for eight pollutants. These are:
In addition, there are six AQI categories, namely
Each of these categories is decided based on ambient concentration values of air pollutants and their likely health impacts (known as health breakpoints).
Based on the measured ambient concentrations of a pollutant, sub-index is calculated, which is a linear function of concentration (For example: the sub-index for PM2.5 will be 51 at concentration 31 µg/m3 , 100 at concentration 60 µg/m3 , and 75 at concentration of 45 µg/m3 ). The worst sub-index determines the overall AQI.
AQI categories and health breakpoints for the eight pollutants are as follow:
