University School of Information Technology (USIT), Dwarka

Location:

University School of Information Technology (USIT) is located inside the newly constructed and recently shifted campus of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) at Sector 16, Dwarka. It’s about one and a half kilometre from Dwarka Sector 14 Metro station on the Blue line and can be accessed in three ways; a 15 minute walk, a 7 rupee per person rickshaw ride or a free bus ride provided by the University itself. So in terms of accessibility it’s not bad once you manage to reach the Metro station. However, students who have previously attended classes at the Kashmere Gate campus obviously feel that this one’s too far!

Infrastructure:

The campus is a huge one with lots of open areas, refreshing gardens and sports facilities underway. The hostels are also in the pipeline and will be opened to the students by this academic year.

However, there is a lack of proper parking space and the students are required to park their cars under the hot sun which turns their cars into furnaces during the summers. The library is common to all departments; it’s a two storey structure with enough space which, however, hasn’t been utilised appropriately and there are few places to sit and read books. There is wired internet connectivity in all the classrooms and labs and a fully Wi-Fi campus has been promised in the near future. All in all there has been an overall improvement in the infrastructure as compared to the old campus, but it does feel like you're in a university.

Fees:

Rs. 48,000/- per year

Faculty:

Most of the teachers are senior and experienced but the students have the opinion that they aren’t as good as they had hoped. “There’s a little hype about these University Schools” says a student. Complaints about many professors being lazy and uninterested in teaching were have been received from the students. There’s too much of freedom during the entire semester and in the end the students are expected to learn by themselves. However, a few teachers are quite helpful and supportive of the students.

Attendance:

In general, an attendance of 75% is mandatory but USIT allows a relaxation of another 5% and students are let go with warnings up to 70%. Medical reasons, extra-curriculars or some other genuine reason may let you off at 55 to 60% on the condition that you’ll compensate for the attendance in the next semester, which of course no one really remembers or cares. So basically, not that strict on the attendance part.

Crowd:

The overall atmosphere in the campus is very lively with beautiful girls hanging around with not-so-beautiful guys and the more handsome guys lingering around single (that’s the scenario everywhere, wonder what these girls are up to!) Talking about USIT in particular, the girls complain of the guys being slightly mean and unsophisticated, but when it’s mass bunk or submission time or everyone gets along pretty well. Most of the students are Delhi-ites leaving aside a few exceptions from here and there.

Canteen:

There’s just one canteen at the campus and except that there’s no other eating joint unlike other campuses which have small Nescafe or a Lipton stalls. The canteen is, however, big and roomy and serves varieties of tasty food at reasonable prices. The only issue is, that being common to all the University Schools it comes out to be a tad bit smaller during lunch time.

Hangouts:

Step outside the college and there’s just endless stretches of road on side and the Metro station can be seen far off on the other. So if you’re planning to bunk just one lecture, the best place to spend time is the inside the campus itself. However, if you’re done for the day, numerous options crop up; Dwarka Sectors 3, 4 and 12 which offer classy snack joints, a variety of eateries and a mall at Rajouri garden and some others which you’ll figure once you’re in the college.

Festivals:

The biggest festival celebrated at the campus here, 'Anugoonj' is the entire IP University’s festival wherein students of all the colleges under the IP University participate and create an atmosphere of unfathomable enthusiasm. Another fest known as “InfoX” organised by just USIT is a technical-cum-cultural-cum-sports festival and sees good participation from USIT itself as well as few other colleges.

Placements:

Again the students come up with a disgusted face and say “We had anticipated so much, and finally we land up with everyone else”. Average salaries come to around Rs. 4L a year, nothing great, most of the other engineering colleges manage to place students with nearly the same packages. TCS is the major recruiter there, and TCS is the major recruiter here! Microsoft, Google and Adobe do visit the campus but they just pick up a handful of lucky, (rather talented) chaps.

Verdict:

University School of Information Technology (USIT) may be one of the top Institutes for Engineering in Delhi by it doesn’t really live up to the expectations of the students. Students hold the opinion that it should be preferred after DCE, NSIT and IGIT (for girls) leaving apart IIT, Delhi of course.
