Usha Subramanian, a luminary born in the sacred city of Varanasi (Kasi), boasts a familial connection to academia with her father serving as a professor at BHU. Her academic journey at BHU culminated in a BA (Hons) degree, where she majored in psychology and philosophy. Her exceptional performance earned her the top position in the university, accompanied by six gold medals personally bestowed upon her by a former Prime Minister of India.Â
Following a hiatus, Usha pursued post-graduation, delving into diverse fields such as Journalism, M.S. in psychiatry and counseling, Audiovisual communication, and Interior design. Remarkably, she emerged as the foremost student in each of these disciplines. Roots in a Tamil medium school in Madras for five formative years ignited Usha's passion for the Tamil language and literature, eventually blossoming into a prolific Tamil writer. Her literary journey commenced with the publication of "Vadigal" in the esteemed Ananda Vikatan magazine in 1976, paving the way for over 400 subsequent stories, articles, plays, and poems.
In 1982, the U.S. government extended an invitation, leading Usha to represent India at the International Writers Forum. Her prowess in Creative Writing earned her the title of "Fellow of Creative Writing" from The University of Iowa. Notably, three of her short stories found a place in Short Story International's compilation of the world's outstanding short stories. Usha's narrative finesse transcends linguistic boundaries, with her stories being widely translated into both Indian and foreign languages. "Kaakai siraginile" holds the distinction of being the first Tamil story translated into Japanese. Her narrative focus remains predominantly women-centric, carrying a powerful undercurrent advocating for social change and the upliftment of women.
Beyond her literary endeavors, Usha Subramanian's professional identity extends into the realm of corporate and documentary filmmaking. As the Director of Apt Media Technics, a renowned entity in corporate circles, she brings her creative vision to the visual storytelling landscape. Moreover, her artistic talents encompass the traditional dance form of Bharatanatyam and the visual arts, demonstrating a multifaceted personality enriched by diverse passions.
