While interacting with English-medium students learning Kannada at school, we observed an interesting perspective. They didn't necessarily dislike the language itself, but the difficulty they faced in reading, understanding, and writing it caused them to avoid it.
The fear of seeming incapable in one language, especially when it didn't directly impact subjects like science or math, motivated their avoidance. They worried about their grades dropping or appearing less intelligent in front of their teachers and classmates.
Learning any language, whether it's Kannada, a literary masterpiece, or Python for coding AI, is an essential survival skill in today's world. Mastering these languages can be a deciding factor, and interestingly, they share similar building blocks.
Just like any other language, you learn the vocabulary (spelling and meaning) and the grammar (known as syntax in coding).
Learning and mastering Kannada would allow a child to gain confidence and the transferable techniques for learning any language, including future endeavours like AI coding.
While we may try to soften the blow by converting scores into grades, children still understand their social and academic implications. Even if we, as parents, claim not to care about their grades, we should support them in achieving their best if they do care.
Self-initiative, a "me vs. me" mentality, is another essential skill for survival in the 21st century. But it doesn't negate the importance of providing support and guidance when needed.
Kannada boasts a rich literary heritage, evidenced by its eight Jnanpith Awards, India's highest honor for literary masterpieces. My secret hope is that by making Kannada easily accessible to children, we can foster a love for reading that leads them to explore the vast and exquisite treasures of Kannada literature.
Imagine sitting alongside your child, perhaps rekindling your own Kannada or even embarking on a new linguistic journey together.
