REFLECTION
This generally aims to improve the overall health of barangay Upper Salug Daku by identifying problems in the community and utilizing available resources to create sustainable and timely solutions. This also intends to promote self-reliance and empower citizens through encouraging responsibility towards their own health.
The Barrio of Upper Salug Daku was first recognized on January 23, 1995 as a unit of government with Salomon F. Artiaga serving as its inaugural leader, known then as the teniente del barrio. On September 16 of the following year, prompted by their eagerness for education, a school site was established in an agricultural land donated by Florenciano Bertulfo. The early settlers utilized a “pahina and pangahoy” system, constructing a two-room structure with a cogon roof, which served as the initial school site. This structure functioned as an extension of the Lower Salug Daku Primary School.
Initially, Upper Salug Daku was an annex of Lower Salug Daku, which formerly fell under the Municipality of Molave, Zamboanga del Sur. In the 1960’s with the establishment of the Municipality of Mahayag, Upper Salug Daku was then integrated as one of its barangays.
The barangay of Upper Salug Daku is headed by their barangay captain, Hon. Marben Baker, who is also the barangay chief executive officer. He is responsible on the following duties: enforce law, sign contracts, maintain public order, preside the barangay assembly, coordinate the barangay development council, approve the allocation of funds, enforcement of environmental laws, administer the operations of the local dispute resolution council or "katarungang pambarangay", ensure the delivery of basic service and promote general welfare of the barangay.
The barangay is also lead by 7 counselors or kagawads. They are responsible on making laws, tax, create barangay budget, build and maintain the barangay facilities and public works, submit requests to higher political unit of government, economic development, solicit and accept funds for barangay projects, provide for the organization of community brigades, control the proliferation of squatters, prescribe fines for the violation of barangay ordinance, organize community lectures on health, education, nutrition and etc., help create a local high school and finally, assist the barangay captain on performing their duties.
The chairperson of the Barangay Sangguniang Kabataan, Ms. April Jane L. Hortilano, is the leader of the youths in the barangay, present in guiding and leading the young people of Upper Salug Daku. Other members of the barangay workers include a secretary, treasurer and civilian volunteer organization (CVO).

On January 03, 2024, our first community exposure at Barangay Upper Salug Daku in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur officially started. Throughout our exposure up until January 27, 2024, it had provided us a stark contrast to the type of lifestyle we were accustomed to. The simplicity of the way of life left a profound impression on us. Most of the residents lived on a "payak" and simple houses. Their hospitality was very remarkable. During our brief stay in the community, they made us feel not just guests, but as an integral member of their community.
Though our engagement to the community, we had found out that majority among the people were farmers. They rely more on agriculture for their livelihoods. Their daily meals are centered around vegetables and crops which underscored to the importance of sustainable living and their connection to the land. Moreover, we did not have a hard time in achieving the objectives of our exposure thanks to the cooperation given to us the barangay officials and its constituents. The warmth in their smiles allowed us to carry our task smoothly and efficiently. Despite of some language and cultural differences, the community's effort and cooperation played a crucial role in our activities to the point that establising rapport to them came out naturally.
The said exposure had prompted us with several realizations. We had realized that knowledge is indeed a great factor in achieving one's potential in terms of health. The misconceptions of the people in terms of medicine and management of disease were indeed alarming. We realized the importance of health awareness and proper health seeking behaviors. The experience provided us a realization that understanding the local practices and beliefs are essential in establishing trust and cooperation. We as a group also realized that in order for us to help the community, we need them to help themselves as well. Their participation is an important variable to the formula of a self-reliant community. This is the reason why we had chosen "UUSaD" as our group name. UUSAD is an abbreviation for Usbong Upper Salug Daku. It means "to bloom forward". We want them to be the main ingredient of the solution. Hence, one of our goals as a group is to make the barangay bloom forward towards a better and healthier holistic life.
