Team UUSAD was invited to Barangay Upper Salug Daku's celebration of the international day against abused drugs and illicit trafficking (IDADAIT) on the 4th day of July 2024 at their barangay covered court, and Azeeza gave a short message to the participants of the said activity.
The General Assembly of United Nations declared June 26 as worldwide Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by resolution 42/112 on December 7, 1987, as an expression of its desire to increase action and cooperation in pursuit of the objective of a drug-free worldwide society. The Philippines has celebrated IDADAIT for 36 years since its institutionalization on June 1, 1988, by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 264.
Team UUSAD had the opportunity to assist with an Operation Tuli conducted by the Rural Health Unit at Poblacion. The Rural Health Unit of Mahayag conducts this activity in different barangays monthly. For Upper Salug Daku, the event took place in June 2024. Unfortunately, the group had not yet arrived when the activity was conducted.
Operation Tuli is a community health initiative aimed at providing free circumcision services to young boys. This outreach program seeks to promote better hygiene and health standards while also respecting cultural practices.
The event includes pre-operative education, the circumcision procedure performed by trained medical professionals, and post-operative care to ensure safe recovery. By offering these services at no cost, Operation Tuli aims to support underserved communities, enhance public health, and foster a spirit of care and cooperation among participants and volunteers.
As the barangay held their monthly meeting at the barangay covered court, we took the opportunity to provide free blood pressure (BP) measurements to the residents. Simultaneously, we conducted a survey for our community health assessment plan focused on hypertension. This initiative aimed to enhance health awareness and gather essential data to improve community health services.
Blood pressure measurements and hypertension assessments were not completed in just one day. We also had to visit residents in different puroks over the following days to carry out these evaluations.
While conducting the BP measurements and hypertension assessment, Azeeza and Edward gathered the residents of Purok 4 and Purok 5 to participate in a focused group discussion regarding their concerns about water. This discussion provided a platform for residents to voice their issues and collaborate on potential solutions, further strengthening community engagement and support.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a prevalent health condition among elderly individuals, including those in Barangay Upper Salug Daku. It significantly impacts their quality of life and overall well-being. Many may be unaware that they have developed this condition, while others may be at risk of developing it.
During the monthly meeting of the senior citizen population, we provided free blood pressure measurements and assessed their awareness of hypertension and its complications. Our barangay nutrition scholar also prepared chocolate porridge for everyone. Additionally, we collected data on the weight and height of the present senior citizens
Water is a significant concern in Puroks 4 and 5. Residents face not only limited access to water but also have serious concerns about its potability. Many worry about the safety and quality of the water they receive, highlighting the need for improved water infrastructure and quality assurance in these areas. While adults are concerned about their own health, they are particularly worried about the potential impact of water quality on their children’s well-being.
To ensure the safety of the water source and the water itself, water analysis was conducted. Water testing for potability and quality involves analyzing water samples to confirm they are safe for human consumption. Potability tests detect harmful microorganisms, chemicals, and other contaminants that could pose health risks. Water quality assessments evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the water to ensure it meets safety standards. Regular testing is crucial for identifying potential issues, maintaining clean and safe water supplies, and protecting public health.
This exposure truly left a lasting impression on all of us, with one of the most memorable experiences being the fun run. As first-time organizers of the event, our three groups were initially uncertain about how to plan and execute it successfully. However, we were fortunate to receive invaluable support from individuals beyond the medical students. Their assistance and guidance played a crucial role in making the fun run a success. From logistical support to creative ideas and hands-on help, the collaboration ensured that the event ran smoothly and was enjoyable for everyone involved. This experience not only taught us about event planning but also highlighted the power of teamwork and community involvement.
