This was generally true of both the modern world wars and the early wars in history that were world wars in their own right – including the Seven Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars – I would argue, mainly for the different two wars. I believe that two factors are necessary. A war involving a large number of nations simply from a real-world war:

A war must be waged in full military force by at least two superpowers, and besides significant involvement of less involved countries, there is no limit to how far the war itself can go.
