First Lieutenant Roslyn L. Schulte
First Lieutenant Roslyn L. Schulte, Air Force Academy Class of 2006, was killed in action outside of Kabul, Afghanistan on May 20, 2009 by a roadside bomb. Lieutenant Schulte is the United States Air Force Academy’s first female graduate killed in action in the Global War on Terrorism and was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. She was also posthumously awarded the National Intelligence Medal for Valor for her efforts to teach Afghan military officials how to gather and interpret military intelligence. At the time of her death, she was establishing the foundation for a new era of military strategy with the Afghan Military.
In three months of duty in Afghanistan, she “made a far-reaching impact on how intelligence was taught and shared with the Afghan National Army,” said the Director of National Intelligence, Dennis C. Blair. Schulte, he added, was “wise beyond her 25 years, and respected as a leader by all those around her -- from general to airman to Afghan tribal leader -- regardless of the branch of service, regardless of nationality.
A 2002 graduate of John Burroughs High School, Roz displayed strong leadership on the lacrosse team and always encouraged her teammates to play their best. She was a member of the Central Division Team her junior and senior year, received MWAA and All State honors, and was an All-American. Roz lead the Burroughs lacrosse team her senior year as captain and continued playing lacrosse at the Air Force Academy where she was also named captain.
Roz loved the game of lacrosse and her play exemplified the true “Spirit of the Game.” It is in that same spirit that we dedicate the Senior All Star Game in her honor and memory.
