In 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt took office as president after William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. Roosevelt easily won re-election in 1904, still running as a Republican though he had begun integrating Progressive politics into his administration. In 1902, he began using the Sherman Anti-Trust Act to take legal action against the country's largest corporations. He was quickly nicknamed "the trustbuster." Roosevelt also led efforts to regulate business, and was a prominent supporter of conservation of natural resources and the protection of wildlife.
