Ursa Major Rabbity is an ARBA-registered rabbitry that is owned and operated by a youth member of the ARBA and the National Rex Rabbit Club located in North Idaho. I breed rabbits for temperament, fur quality, meat capacity, and overall quality. I breed to the ARBA standard of perfection. Rabbits have always been on my list of livestock to own, I love how many opportunities they provide. You can use rabbits for a wide variety of things, everything from fur, wool, meat, pets, show, and more. I started my journey into rabbits in mid-2023 and took in all the information I could find, not only about Rex's but rabbit ownership in general. I now raise wonderful breeds that are always getting better.
I chose rex's for a wide variety of reasons. They are a dual-purpose breed, meaning you can use them for fur as well as meat. Another reason I chose rex's is that they are a larger breed of rabbit without being as large as something like the Flemish giants. But none of that compares to the main reason I picked them as the breed I want to own. Any good breeder is breeding to the ARBA standard of perfection, but what does that mean? If a breeder is breeding to the standard of perfection they have read and understand the standard The American Rabbit Breeder Association has for rex's as a breed. I spent a while reading different standards and learning about the different breeds of rabbits that are accepted by ARBA. I am confident when I say I do not understand exactly what the breed standards are actually saying for some of the breeds. I also looked through the different body types there are in rabbits. I believe a good breeder should be able to tell you at least the basics of what you should be looking for in a good rex (or whatever breed you are getting). While I am still learning, the commercial body type made the most sense to me, I started there when looking for my breed. Rex's breed standard is the one that peaked my interest, they are not only dual purpose but I love the way they look.
My plans are to get more litters on the ground and watch closely how my lines develop. I also plan to continue showing my rabbits and regularly evaluating their structures to check they are meeting the standards I am looking for in my rabbits. Long term I want to focus more on making show-quality Amber, Chinchilla, Sable, and Seal rex as well as getting home gowns on the show table and developing my eye.
