Quantum Gravity With(out) Experiments?

Epistemology at the Edge of Physics

10 March 2023

University of Urbino

Quantum Gravity With(out) Experiments? will focus on a crucial research topic in physics and philosophy: quantum gravity theories' epistemological status. There is a fundamental question that the various approaches to quantum gravity should answer: how can we develop a theory of quantum gravity given the lack of experimental evidence for these regimes and, thus, of empirical guidance in its development? Furthermore, insofar as one can develop a theory of quantum gravity despite this issue, are the various approaches to quantum gravity thus far developed making progress towards a final theory of the quantum nature of spacetime? Or are they spinning their wheels in a sea of pure speculation, lacking the compass of empirical data?

This topic has manifold ramifications, both for physics and philosophy. Ramifications that will be discussed in detail by our speakers: Daniele Oriti (LMU Munich), Irene Valenzuela (CERN), Jácome Armas (Faculty of Science, UvA), Karen Crowther (University of Oslo), and Richard Dawid (Stockholm University).

Overall, this conference offers an invaluable opportunity for students and scholars to learn and discuss quantum gravity theories' epistemological status.

Note that the conference will be in hybrid format, online and in person in Urbino.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Blaumann Foundation, which financed this event in the context of their Blaumann Research Grants.
