This table outlines the ratios of the various of the aggregate components of existing asphalt mixes and our mix
These are some of the aggregate mixes (left) and the binding portion of asphalt (right) that we were able to see at Barnhill Contracting Company in Kinston
On our way to Kinston we actually got to drive past a construction site where they were laying fresh asphalt and go to take photos of some of the equipment
This is the sifting mechanism (left) that sorts out the various sized pieces of aggregates using sieves, it then prints a ticket that gives the proportions of the sizes
The hot box (left) is used to melt the binder of the asphalt and return it to a liquid state so that it can be mixed with the aggregates
The rutting machine (right) is used to test the durability of the various compositions of different asphalt mixes and tests their ability to withstand traffic
The kiln (left) reaches extremely high temperatures to cure the asphalt and to settle it so that it reaches the correct consistency and that the aggregate settle correctly within the asphalt
