Up-uplas is a barangay of the Philippine municipality, Sudipen in the province of La Union.

History:

During the early 20^th century, concealed by the American invasion to the Philippines, Amercian soldiers reached different place within the locality. On their way to the mountainous tead, soldiers met an old man named Catan, one of the oldest residents of the locale. Old man Catan was good at carving and furniture making. He showed to the soldier one of his masterpieces. The soldiers cheered upon seeing the model and called it “antiques.”

Another time when the soldiers passed by the house of Lakay Catan, they saw the latter polishing one of finished works with dried leaves UPLAS, a tree with coarse leaves found plenty in the place, where the community uses it as vis-à-vis the sandpaper in sleeking furniture. Lakay Catan asked repeatedly pronounces “UPLAS,UPLAS.”

The chief soldier the decided and declared barangay Up-uplas as the name of the barangay,

Up-uplas was a barrio of the municipality of Sugpon. Sugpon has the greater right to own Up-uplas as one of the barangay. A land survey has undertaken and boundaries were revised. Thus the Amburayan River was pronounced as the boundary of Ilocos Sur and La Union.
