José Manuel Martins Ferreira concluded his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1992 at the University of Porto, Portugal, specializing in design and test of digital systems. Since September 2013 he is Professor of Digital Electronics at the Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences, University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), Campus Kongsberg. Before taking up his current position he was vice-president for pedagogical affairs at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). He founded FEUP’s Teaching and Learning Lab in 2008 (LEA, Laboratório de Ensino e Aprendizagem), introduced the Google Apps for Education program in FEUP in 2013, and was from 2005 to 2011 the Head of the University’s panel that awarded the “U.PORTO e-Learning Excellence Prize”. He was vice-rector of the University of Porto from July 2014 to June 2018 (on leave of absence from USN during this period), where he was responsible for information management, educational technologies, quality and continuous improvement. During the course of this mandate, he coordinated the A3ES certification of U.Porto’s internal quality assurance system (obtaining the best result awarded by A3ES since this process started in 2010), created Google for Education and Microsoft Office 365 programs in all 14 faculties, launched U.Porto’s distance learning platform (AcademiaUP, http://academia.up.pt/), and promoted the development of U.Porto’s first MOOC.
