Sometimes you can be fortunate to come across a heron track in the fine mud along the banks of the stream. A good location to see tracks is above Gardiner Paperboard dam, the first dam above the Kennebec River. This track was 17 and a half centimeters long!

How successful are ospreys when fishing?

Any angler would be pleased with the Osprey's success: One out of every four tries. Ospreys, nicknamed the fish hawk, nest and fish along the stream. For more information about ospreys and birds check out https://ebird.org/me/home

From September through November each fall, Ring billed Gulls await the juvenile alewives at Gardiner's three downtown dams. These 2 to 3 inch fish provide important nutrients to a variety of birds and mammals as they tumble over the dam, swimming together to the Kennebec River, Merrymeeting Bay and onto the mighty Atlantic Ocean from their natal ponds and streams in Cobbosseecontee watershed.

Eagles join in the hunt for juvenile alewives on the stream.
