Uphsur Compost Cooperative is part of a citywide effort to compost household and commercial organic waste. We are one of 50 volunteer-run cooperatives across the city, located at the Upshur Community Garden on 14th and Upshur Street NW. Composting lowers the carbon footprint, keeps organic material out of the landfill, and provides rich soil for the community garden and co-op members.
Joining is easy! New members will take a 1 hour training where they learn about the hot composting method and how to properly add material to the composter. Once you have completed the training, you will be given access to the bins and can being composting. Everyone is expected to attend regular workdays to sift, turn, and water the compost. Contact the compost manager at leah.a.drew@gmail.com for the next available training.
The compost cooperative is open to any member of the public. It is not limited to community garden members. The only requirements are training and workday attendance.
