TDU: UPS announced operating profits for 2022 of $13.1 billion.
UPS expects to make up to $13.5 billion in profits this year. all Street and the company are getting theirs. Teamsters at UPS are coming for ours in the 2023 contract. Once again, UPS Teamsters are leading the company’s economic success and profitability. Peak season revenue in the U.S. was up by more than half a billion dollars compared to 2021. In comparison, company revenue from its international segment was down by $447 million.
Wall Street Cashes In
As profits soar, Wall Street investors are cashing in. UPS paid $8.6 billion in cash last year alone to investors through dividends and share buybacks. (Source: UPS Pressroom). In the meantime, UPS Teamsters have gotten smacked with two-tier 22.4, forced sixth punches, low part-time pay, and even wage cuts when the company arbitrarily reverses MRAs, among other concessions.
Incredibly, today’s haul wasn’t enough for Wall Street who wanted even more payouts for investors. Analysts point to declining revenue from international shipping, due to volume reductions and softening demand in China. (Source: CNBC). UPS’s Chief Financial Officer Brian Newman warned that 2023 will be “a bumpy year.” Teamsters at UPS can expect a lot more management crying as contract negotiations heat up. We’re not falling for it.
UPS made $13.1 billion in profits in each of the last two years. Now, they are projecting profits of $13.5 billion in 2023 despite a slowing economy. The 350,000 Teamsters at UPS are coming for what’s ours in contract negotiations. Members need to show the company that we’re united to win the contract we deserve.
Is UPS Retaliating Against Union Activists?
The UPS contract covering nearly 350,000 people expires next year. According to some workers, management has already launched its anti-labor fight. By Teddy Ostrow Twitter
"Doug Hilse, a feeder driver at a small UPS center in Lawton, Okla., was fired in January, after just shy of 35 years on the job. He was a Teamsters Local 886 shop steward for 22 of those years. Like Arlin, Hilse was allegedly fired for “stealing time,” but he believes he was terminated for sticking up for his coworkers. In July 2021, he filed a grievance against the company for retaining a supervisor who had been convicted of assault in the facility. In September, he was approached and questioned about the grievance by supervisors at a separate facility in Oklahoma City where he would pick up packages."

UPS Inc. cited for repeat, serious safety hazards at Secaucus, NJ, processing and distribution center; fined $45,500 by US Labor Department's OSHA https://www.osha.gov/news/newsreleases/region2/09232013 . “Employers must continually evaluate their facilities for hazards and develop comprehensive safety and health programs to adequately protect workers, said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Loren Sweatt.
The hazardous conditions at this UPS facility can impede a worker’s ability to promptly exit in an emergency, placing them at risk for serious or fatal injuries, said OSHA Braintree Area Director James Mulligan. Employers are required by law to provide workers with safe and healthful workplaces.”, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR CITES UPS INC. "Since 1972, UPS has been cited for 2,786 OSHA violations and has paid $4.6 million in fines, receiving more worker complaints than any other company, Aaron Freeman. Heat related injury is a prevalent and dangerous ongoing problem at UPS. NBC (https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/osha-cites-ups-excessive-heat-exposure-after-nbc-investigation-n1046991 continued from https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/hot-seat-ups-delivery-drivers-are-risk-heat-stroke-kidney-n1031321) reported “In July, an NBC News investigation revealed that more than 100 UPS employees were hospitalized for serious heat-related injuries between 2015 and 2018, more than any other company in the country except the U.S. Postal Service.
Having a space, we can cool down in an emergency such as heat related injury is essential to staying safe and healthy. Drivers are given a list of areas to take breaks in cool area and areas to rest in case of heat related injury. An enclosed air condition breakroom would allow us to have an equivalent but necessary accommodation. The CDC states (https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warning.html) “heat-related illnesses are preventable” and they make some simple and reasonable suggestions to achieve this goal. Two of the most common suggestions are to “spend time in air-conditioned buildings during breaks and after work ” and suggests employers “encourage co-workers to take breaks to cool off and drink water.” This can easily be established by having a dedicated enclosed and air-conditioned breakrooms and air conditioning in vehicles. “The 2021 statewide average temperature was 55.4°, which is 2.6° above the normal of 52.8°. This makes 2021 the 7th warmest year on record for New Mexico!”, (https://www.weather.gov/abq/climonhigh2021annual-mainpage).
We are in a global crisis that has created unforeseen concerns and issues to our essential workers. We are pleading for your assistance in dealing with these unforeseeable issues that arise daily. These heroes risk their lives and their family’s lives every day, every hour, and every minute they are exposed at work providing the world with their essentials. We proudly serve our community, our company, our country, and humanity without question. We beg of you to help us continue to serve our duty by supplying your employees with hazard pay during their sacrifice and compliance thru this global pandemic.
“Hazardous duty is duty performed under circumstances in which an accident could result in serious injury or death. Duty involving a physical hardship is duty that may not in itself be hazardous but causes extreme physical discomfort or distress and is not adequately alleviated by protective or mechanical devices.”

Procedure/surgical masks are made for limited exposure in the general public and are inefficient for viruses only protecting against bacteria and pollen. The scope of our jobs exceeds what these masks are capable of protecting us from. We need quality protection from efficient products because we are the frontline infantry and we need products that protect us in our everyday exposure.
Due to the increasing health risks of this pandemic we are faced with new regulations requiring masks, additional personal care products (gloves, sanitation products), and daily health checkups (medical/electronic devices). We endure potential costly financial hardships of funeral costs, childcare, and medical expenses (copays, ambulance, urgent care fees, ect). These issues put an unforeseen financial hardship on our heroes. We only ask for what many companies (Costco, Target, Walmart, Tractor Supply Co., CVS, Kroger, Wegmans, J. M. Smucker, Amazon, and others) have already provided to their heroes.

Due to these unforeseen hardships the government has issued a stimulus package providing companies with 2 trillion dollars in funding to pay essential workers hazard pay. UPS Peak increases are already in effect in order to support their employee’s financial burden during this crisis.

We know UPS will do what is ethically right for their dedicated and diligent workers. Because being ranked in the “Just 100: Companies Doing Right by America” means above all else committing to treating your workers well, especially in a time of crisis. Doing Right by America means doing right by your employees by giving them hazard pay for their duty to America.
David Abney, UPS chairman and CEO announced “I want to thank all 495,000 UPSers for their extraordinary efforts to leverage the full power of our global network in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, keeping critical goods moving for businesses and consumers globally.” “The world is counting on UPS more than ever before as we support the people on the front lines of this crisis and our customers with speed, ingenuity and reliability.” UPS please do more than thank your heroes by providing your employees with hazard pay (retro back pay) from March of 2020 until the foreseeable end of this horrible crisis.
