CROSS COUNTRY TEAM SCORING
Placing & Points: Each runner is assigned points based on their finishing position. First-place gets 1 point, second-place gets 2 points, and so on.
Team Scoring: The scores of each team’s top five finishers are combined to determine the team score. If a school's top five runners finished in 2nd, 5th, 8th, 12th, & 15th place, their team score is 2+5+8+12+15 = 42 points. A team must have at least 5 runners to compete as a full team and the lowest team score wins.
Tiebreakers & Displacement: In the case of a tie, the team's sixth runner is seen as tie breaker. If the sixth runner for one team finished higher than the sixth runner for another team, that team would win the tiebreaker. The teams 6th & 7th runners also displace other teams top 5 when finish ahead of them. The 6th & 7th do not count towards the point total but create a higher final score for our competitors.
Example of Displacement:
UPREP: 1 + 3 + 8 + 12 + 15 | 16 17
RIVAL: 2 + 3 + 14 + 18 + 19
You can see that because UPREP's 6 & 7 runners got 16th & 18th placed that displaced (or forced) the Rival team's 4th & 5th runner back to 19 and 20th. Effectively adding 4 points to their score.
