What is a fish barrier?

A fish barrier is:

• A common tools resource managers use to help recover native fish by protecting streams from upstream invasion by non-native fish.
• Constructed of reinforced concrete, spanning the river channel and floodplain.
• A 4-foot drop combined with a sloping apron prevents non-native fish from moving upstream of the barrier.

A fish barrier does not:

• Prevent the downstream movement of fish, the barrier's purpose is to prevent upstream movement only.
• Affect the flow of the river, because flows spill over the structure and any upstream pooling caused by the structure is typically filled by sediment within a year.
• Prevent river runners from kayaking/canoeing​/rafting the river. However, due to the nature of the 4​-foot drop structure boaters will likely have to portage over the barrier.
