The BA Speech Communication program from the University of the Philippines – Diliman is a one of a kind degree program offered in the Philippines. Speech communication, as a discipline and a program offers a wide variety of choices and opportunities to its students. It is divided into four specific areas of concentration namely rhetoric, performance, interpersonal communication, and instructional communication.
The speech communication program envisions its students to develop competence in understanding human interaction and the use of verbal and nonverbal symbols to create meaning in different communicative phenomena. Additionally, learners in the field are trained to exhibit understanding and practice the value of communication competence not only in public speaking, but also in critical discourse, research, and in comprehending other communication phenomena.
Areas of Concentration
Instructional communication heavily deals with the communicative aspect in an instructional setting. This area aims centers on the teaching-learning process and other factors that affect the communication of knowledge from the teacher to the learner.
Interpersonal communication focuses on theories and concepts that deal with the use of verbal and nonverbal symbols in everyday, mundane interactions. This can range from daily conversations with other people, forming and ending relationships, communication in the workplace, creating intercultural bonds, and other communicative phenomena.
Performance as an area in speech communication centers its knowledge on oral interpretation and performance studies. This area focuses on performance and using it as a communicative lens to understand the world and daily actions. These performances may be seen as theatrical events, spoken poetry pieces, or even something as mundane as sharing a personal story with friends.
Rhetoric as a sub-discipline delves in on persuasion, in order to transform some aspect of a problematic communication situation. This area focuses on encouraging learners to engage in deliberation on social issues, to discover warrantable beliefs and improve these in a shared discourse.
