The Gee-Gees Nordiq Ski Team is passionate about keeping athletes skiing during their university studies.  We are a varsity program under Gee-Gees Athletics that combines a strong academic environment with high-level racing opportunities. Our team of about 40 athletes trains and competes together in a supportive, high-performance setting. Each year, we welcome upwards of five new athletes per gender, creating a dynamic environment that balances development and competition at the varsity level.

Racing with the Gee-Gees

We welcome a wide range of athletes. We race throughout Eastern Canada, including the Ontario University Championships (OUAs) and Canadian Nationals, and this season, we’re proud to host the 2026 OUA Championships at Nakkertok in February. In 2025, both our men’s and women’s teams finished top three at OUAs, and Gee-Gees athletes have represented Canada at the FISU Games, and Cross Country, Biathlon and Paranordic World Cup events. We even have two porential 2026 Olympic and Paralympic athletes among our team and alumni!

Training Environment

The Gee-Gees train together 4–5 times per week from September through April, with structured coaching and year-round training guidance. Our home training base is Nakkertok Nordic, just 15 minutes from campus, offering snowmaking, world class race trails, and exceptional grooming. Nakkertok is one of only two venues in Eastern Canada with early-season snowmaking, typically opening from mid to late November. We also train in Gatineau Park, with over 200 km of world-class ski and rollerski trails, and use Ottawa's growing urban winter trail network, including the Rideau Winter Trail and Kichi Sibi Trail right in downtown Ottawa. Our dryland strength training takes place in the Gee-Gees High Performance Centre with our dedicated strength coach.

What it Means to be a Gee-Gee Student-Athlete

Becoming a Gee-Gee student-athlete means joining a close, high-performing community. Our athletes train and study alongside some of the best student-athletes in the country, building lifelong friendships and leadership skills in the process. The team has priority access to sports therapy through the Ottawa Sports Medicine Clinic and strength facilities at the High Performance Centre, equipped with a skierg, treadmills, and training equipment available throughout the year. While we value competitive excellence, we place a strong emphasis on academic success and balance, ensuring athletes have support to manage both sport and school commitments.

Fun fact: the name “Gee-Gees” comes from our colours, Garnet and Grey (GG), and is also a nickname for a racehorse leading the pack.
