National Indigenous Climate Compass (NICC)
-- Community Page Development
-- Community Page Development
Indigenous communities across Canada are facing urgent challenges due to climate change, including rising sea levels, increased wildfires, and thawing permafrost, which threaten infrastructure, food security, and cultural heritage.
While data exists, there is a lack of accessible infrastructure designed to help these communities adapt to these new realities. We aim to use “relation-centric” theory to redesign the Community Detail Page and Map visualization to present climate, species, fire, and flood information in a clear, meaningful way for non-expert users. By enhancing the NICC online Knowledge Center, this project will empower Indigenous communities to visualize risks and plan adaptation strategies.

" What I learned from this project is accuracy does not equal accessiblity. Even data is correct, that doesn't mean users can understand it or use it. "
Yangchun Chen
" What I gained most from this project is learning to think from the user's perspective — taking complex climate and species data and turning it into something non-technical community members can actually understand and act on."
Tianyi Jiang
" This project taught me that good design is not just about data accuracy, but about making information meaningful and understandable for real users. "
Jie Wang
" What I learned from this project is teamwork. Everyone steps up, takes initiative, and brings great ideas. That’s why we delivered such an awesome work. "

" I developed hands-on prototyping skills, built interactive maps, and learned how to align with stakeholders across a real-world, community-facing platform. Working in a team pushed me to communicate design decisions clearly and iterate based on feedback. "
