The UOG Farmer Focus Team flew out to Spokane, Washington for the 2023 AgrAbility National Training Workshop to present about our local farming community and the purpose our project serves as one of the organizations leading the discussion on farmer health and well-being.

2022 Islands of Opportunity Alliance - Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (IOA-LSAMP) Conference

Research intern Grace Anne Dela Cruz, now extension assistant, presented the data findings of the Agricultural Producer Stress Survey at the IOA-LSAMP conference as part of her participation in the National Institutes of Health/NIDDK's Short-Term Research Experience Program to Unlock Potential (STEP-UP) 2022 cohort.

JUNE 28, 2023 (WED) 

2023 Farmer Focus Conference - Enriching Wellness on Our Farms

@ FSM-China Friendship Center, College of Micronesia, Palikir, Pohnpei  -> 8 AM - 5 PM 

Our team hosted a conference in collaboration with the College of Micronesia (COM-FSM). Local and national partners, such as Guam Behavioral Health & Wellness Center (GBHWC) and the Western Regional Agricultural Stress Assistance Program (WRASAP), came to share their resources and information about their respective programs. The conference covered various health and wellness topics like coping mechanisms, resiliency building, nutrition and cooking, and how to use writing for wellness and reflection. 

JUNE 27, 2023 (TUES) 

Mental Health First Aid Training

@ FSM-China Friendship Center, College of Micronesia, Palikir, Pohnpei  -> 8 AM - 5 PM 

Our team traveled to Pohnpei, FSM to host this training for local agriculture workers and staff at the College of Micronesia (COM-FSM). The UOG Farmer Focus team has two employees who are certified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructors under the National Council of Mental Wellbeing. The goal of this training was to equip individuals who work closely with local farmers with key skills and resources necessary for addressing various mental health challenges and situations. All training participants received certification following the conclusion of the course. 

MAY 17, 2023 (THURSDAY) 

Food for Thought: Farmer Wellness Seminar + BBQ Bootcamp

@ Farmers Co-op Market -> 4 PM - 8 PM 

To touch on some of the topics of interest indicated by our local community, such as nutrition and stress management, we hosted another wellness workshop. The first half of this workshop was dedicated to discussing coping strategies, specifically in situations that local farmers are susceptible to, such as natural disasters, work-related injuries, and farm accidents. The second half focused on proper meat selection and preparation, covering how to differentiate between different cuts of pork and beef along with where they are sourced on the animal, how to assess the quality of the meat you are purchasing based on its marbling and maturity, and how to properly cook meat to prevent foodborne illness and infections. 

MARCH 13-17, 2023 (MON-FRI) 

Farmer Focus: Benefits & Basics of Indoor Planting 

@ Guahan Academy Charter School -> 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM 

Our project partnered with UOG's Family and Consumer Sciences branch to host sessions at the Guahan Academy Charter School during their after-school program. The students were taught how to take care of an indoor plant and the benefits that come with maintaining one. This series of workshops allowed us to expand our reach beyond our typical farmer demographic and find ways to better support our general island community.

UOG Charter Day 

@ Agriculture & Life Sciences Building, University of Guam -> 9 AM - 2 PM 

Participating in the University of Guam's annual Charter Day celebration allowed us to broaden our project's audience and reconnect with some of the individuals who have been vital parts of our research and outreach efforts. We are also able to share more information about our initiative as well as resources we had available at our booth.

Wellness Talks Workshop

@ Dededo Farmer's Co-op -> 3 PM - 5 PM 

Farmers from all over the island came to the Farmer's Co-op to learn more about local programs and resources available for those who work in the agriculture sector. Some of the organizations represented were I'Pinangon, Guam Behavioral Health and Wellness Center, Farmers Cooperative Association of Guam, and Chinese Farmers Association.

Mental Health First Aid Training  

@ Agriculture and Life Sciences Building, University of Guam -> 8 AM - 5 PM 

Extension personnel were given an opportunity to be trained in Mental Health First Aid to supplement their outreach efforts and to strengthen their skills in handling potential crisis situations.

JUNE 17, 2022 (FRIDAY) 

"FARMER FOCUS: Cultivating Health and Wellness with Our Farming Community" Conference 

@ Unnai Ballroom, The Westin Resort Guam -> 2 PM - 8 PM 

The Farmer Focus Conference was held for the first time with a focus on farm stress and mental health management. It was hosted by the University of Guam Cooperative Extension and Outreach office and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences in collaboration with the Guam Behavioral Health and Wellness Center (GBHWC) and the Western Regional Agricultural Stress Assistance Program (WRASAP). 

Participants learned about topics such as stress, anxiety, suicide prevention, overall wellness, relaxation tips, and local and national mental health resources and services.
