D-Day at Chichester

Did you know that much of the fighter cover over the D-Day beaches in June 1944 was controlled from our campus? During the war, the University was occupied by the Air Ministry, housing many vital servicemen and women and also serving as a temporary Operations Room for the nearby RAF Tangmere.

For the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the University helped to organise and host a series of local events to mark D-Day in and around Chichester District, including a programme of scheduled public talks and a project to help record local memories of the preparations for D Day. We are proud to have worked with the West Sussex Record Office, the Novium Museum, Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, and the Save Tangmere Tower campaign in helping mark this important commemoration. You can find out more about the project and explore some sources from the time on the project website. Click here for more!
