2024's Day Info
Date & Location for 2024's Physics Teacher Day = Nov 29th @ UoA's Engineering Building: 20 Symonds Street: Lecture Theatre 401
Note: This is the last day of the NCEA exam season and the Friday of week 7 of term 4. Hopefully teachers around/near Auckland can arrange cover if needed and attend.
Registration will be opened early Term 3:
Be aware, if multiple teachers are attending from 1 school only a single registration form is needed. So have a chat with your workmates before registering, if you're lucky enough to have physics-teaching workmates!
While we may have part of the day devoted to how teachers have found the new L1 NCEA or whatever else their school may have decided to do with Yr11, there may also be some time to discuss any movement or details of the yet to be heard about "senior science curriculum". With the push-back of the NCEA review so that L2 now starts in 2028 and L3 in 2029 there likely wont be any meaningful information about that by November of this year.
For the last 3 years, NZIP has kindly be helped out with various aspects of the day, including paying for teachers new to physics teaching to attend the day. Thus a massive thanks to NZIP! It is hoped that this can continue but that depends on funding from MoE.
At this point in time, our planned program for the day includes:
Keynote: Kasper van Wijk, director of the new Environmental Physics programme and Geophysics at UoA.
A possible session looking back on Yr11 2024's programs.
A possible session on any information related to the senior science curriculum (if info is available by late November)
Info from UoA Engineering Department
Info from UoA Physics Department
Info from Sarah Shaw (Trident High School) and Dave Thrasher (St Cuthbert's) about possible overseas teacher PLD: Perimeter Institute's EinsteinPlus programme in Canada & LIGO's program in USA
A couple of things from Haggis Henderson:
The traditional sharing of ideas and Q&A
Possibly a mop-up of how the scholarship, L3, L2 and perhaps even L1 exams have gone - if time allows
Costs: depending on where you work & how far you'll be coming. Dave will be in touch after your school is registered. Costs include morning tea and lunch.
$35 for student teachers to teacher-trainees currently at uni
$40 for teachers outside of the Auckland area
$50 for teachers in Auckland-area schools
