The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) is a 100-year-old organization dedicated to maintaining Ukrainian culture and, more recently, fundraising for humanitarian aid to Ukraine in its war against Russia. Our Ann Arbor branch has been in existence for 50 years. It was first started when Ukrainian immigrants during World War II arrived in Ann Arbor and sought companionship in a strange land where they knew little about the U.S. and found solace in their own kind.
We are committed to advocating for Ukraine, fostering Ukrainian culture, and helping those in need. While most have Ukrainian heritage, we’re open to all who are interested in fostering Ukrainian culture and traditions.
Each year, we typically celebrate Ukrainian holidays like Kolyada (Christmas caroling and feast), which is open to the wider Ukrainian community; Independence Day on August 24, a picnic which members and community alike attend; and Vyshyvanka Day (third Thursday in May), a celebration of Ukrainian traditional folk costumes, particularly embroidered shirts.
In 2025, we celebrated Vyshyvanka Day at York Food and Drink, which drew a strong community engagement, with hundreds of attendees coming together to celebrate Ukrainian culture while supporting a meaningful cause. We raised over $10,000 to donate to Hospitallers, a medical unit working on Ukraine’s frontlines saving lives of soldiers.
