The Unity Concert

I was elected to be the Director of Internal Affairs at the first Graduate Student Government Body at UNT.

I was previously witness to some amazing Graduate Student talent latent in the student body and was hoping to put together a platform for them to showcase their skills beyond their Lab! I drew inspiration from the Madras Telugu Academy's Spirit of Unity Concerts back in the day and thought that should be the way to do it.

I reached out to some of my good friends and colleagues on Campus, and asked them for potential participants, besides the obvious ones. One led to another, and there emerged a fantastic program beyond my initial imagination.

The unity or UNiTy concert had a great line up - Carnatic Classical recital, Chinese Pipa presentation, Mariachi Ensemble with Son De Negera and other favorites, The Persian Music group with poems from Rumi, Omar Khayuum and others, recited with Santoor and Daf!

The culmination was by the African gance group. Gideon Folu Alorwoyie himself was in attendance! Gideon is from Ghana, and the high priest, of the Yewe cult (which is part of the Ewe ethnic group) of Ghana’s Volta region. It was a 2-hour long concert with a break after 1-hour mark, with light refreshments and snacks provided.

The Dean of the College of Music, Dean of Graduate School, and other Professors were in attendance, and everyone was visibly happy with the show. I particularly enjoyed the concert since it was my first larger than class-scale organization of event, and was a grand success. Seth Ketron was highly supportive all through. People from distinct colleges met each other, and many new bonds forged. The Persian group, composed exclusively of Engineering Graduates were later that year invited to perform in the College of Music Auditorium, a rare occurrence indeed. Similarly, students from the African heritage, outside the college of Music acquainted with Gideon et alia.

In the end, the concert was true to the name - UNITY, bringing together and fostering the Unity of peoples on the Campus
