Impacts of Fast Fashion in Bangladesh
Overall, the Garment industry accounts for 85% of Bangladesh export income, and includes more than 12 million Bangladeshis dependent on the sector. The study also found that after the pandemic factories only employed 75% of the workers they had before, which suggests that up to 900,000 could have job losses (Schwimmer, 2003)
More than half of the clothing factories have experienced at least one of the following problems: order cancellations, refusal to pay, price reductions or delayed payment for goods and products (Schwimmer, 2003).
Supports:
Apparel and textiles- and that largely equates to fast fashion, contributes around 20 per cent of Bangladesh's GDP as well as 80 per cent of its exports (Schwimmer, 2003). The fast fashion sector is therefore crucial. Not only to the national economy, but also to its four million, mainly female workers (Schwimmer, 2003)
The Future:
By 2023, the apparel industry will be largely mechanised, and the position in Bangladesh can be lifted as a leading exporter of ready-made garments, by adopting various modern technologies (Schwimmer, 2003). The use of technology in the apparel industry has revolutionised the way clothes are designed, produced, and sold (Schwimmer, 2003).
