These courses are part of the 16 hour Arts and Sciences World Language requirement. They are also prerequisites to the courses for the Spanish major and minor. They follow a proficiency-oriented approach and emphasize the mastery of all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Additionally they focus on local and global Spanish-speaking cultures. A grade of “C-” or better is required to continue to the next level. These courses may be taken credit/ no credit, but may not be audited.
SPAN 1100, 1200 and 2300 are equivalent to Spanish 1110, 1120 and 2110 but they focus on vocabulary relating to the healthcare field, typical interactions between patient/client and healthcare providers, with an emphasis on sociocultural issues relevant to healthcare services.
To be successful in any class format, students must prepare all assigned materials prior to each class meeting. For each credit hour of a college-level course, the general rule is that a student dedicates a total of 2-3 hours to the class per week per credit hour. For example, for a 5-credit hour course, one should expect to dedicate 12-15 hours per week to the class. Consider this as you plan your semester. When a class is full/closed, failure to attend the first two class sessions of the semester may result in disenrollment.
For this class format, you will meet in-class for all credit hours, distributed as indicated when you register. There will be online homework to complete.
These classes are divided between 3 credit hours in-person and 2 hours of online instruction. We follow a flipped model in which students first explore new material prior to class online in order to maximize on in-class interactions.
All instruction will take place online with no scheduled meeting time. There are two weekly assignment deadlines. Students will still engage in synchronous interactions (live sessions) via Zoom with the instructor or their peers regularly throughout the semester.
