Library of Congress Subject Headings and shelf locations for Sociology materials are found throughout the stacks. Most related topics can be found in the H section (Social Sciences) or embedded in other specific subject areas. For example, texts on specific ethnic groups, customs and histories can be found in the Es.

National Archive of Criminal Justice Data
The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) archives and disseminates primary data on crime and justice for secondary analysis. The archive contains data from over 2,700 curated studies or statistical data series and is home to several large-scale and well known datasets, including the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), and the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN).
National Crime Victimization Survey
The Bureau of Justice Statistics' (BJS) National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is the nation's primary source of information on criminal victimization. Each year, data are obtained from a nationally representative sample of about 135,000 households, composed of nearly 225,000 persons, on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal victimization in the United States.
National Criminal Justice Reference Service Contains summaries of more than 160,000 criminal justice publications, including Federal, State, and local government reports, books, research reports, journal articles, and unpublished research.
The Internet Archive has opened access for all students to over 1.4 million books until the US National Emergency is determined to be over. This includes TEXTBOOKS!
National Juvenile Court Data
The National Juvenile Court Data Archive houses automated records of cases handled by courts with juvenile jurisdiction. The Archive was established by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, within the U.S. Department of Justice, to promote access to automated juvenile court data sets for juvenile justice research and policymaking efforts. This web site was developed to inform researchers about the available data sets and the procedures for use and access.
NCVS Victimization Analysis Tool
This dynamic analysis tool allows you to examine National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) data on both violent and property victimization by select victim, household, and incident characteristics. Use this tool for more detailed data.

World Criminal Justice Library Electronic Network
The World Prison Brief (WPB) is a unique database that provides free access to information about prison systems throughout the world. Country information is updated on a monthly basis, using data largely derived from governmental or other official sources.

Includes crime mapping and statistics as well as reports.
U.S. Census Bureau Gathers social, demographic and economic information about the US through many censuses and surveys. Browse their massive amounts of data by using either the "Topics" tab or the "Index A-Z" link. Click on the "Data" tab to view a list of the Census Bureau "Data Tools and Apps" for finding and using the data.
Data.Census.Gov One of the best tools to access US Census Bureau data and statistics from these censuses and surveys. Users can create data tables and download them into spreadsheet files.
Data.gov Portal for datasets (statistical and geospatial) produced by the US federal government. The site is not exhaustive but does include data from many agencies.
Current Population Survey
A joint project between the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the US Census Bureau (not included in American FactFinder). The CPS is a monthly survey that collects basic socio-demographic information and labor force characteristics. To access CPS data files, users can go through the Data Ferrett (see link below). Alternately, they can go to the National Bureau of Economic Research's CPS site or to the IPUMS CPS site.
Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS)
(From the Univ of Minnesota Population Center) Excellent source for US Census data in the form of microdata samples (i.e. NOT compiled statistics) from each decennial Census from 1850-2000 and from the American Community Survey from 2001 on. View a list of the samples available. IPUMS also adds value to this data by assigning uniform codes across all the samples and bringing relevant documentation into a coherent form to facilitate analysis of social and economic change. IPUMS also hosts a growing collection of microdata census files from foreign countries as well as a microdata from the CPS.
NHGIS (National Historical Geographic Information System)
Access to summary statistics and GIS boundary files for U.S. censuses and other nationwide surveys from 1790 through the present. (From the Minnesota Population Center)
World Bank Data
Open access to data about development from countries around the globe. You can search via country, topic, indicator OR click on the "Data Catalog" tab for a list of all available data sets OR click on the "Microdata" tab for available microdata.
World Development Indicators (World Bank)
One of the data sets available from the World Bank - allows you to quickly create tables comparing time series data on a variety of indicators by country.
Statistical Capacity Building Project (World Bank)
"Provides resources to help ... develop better statistical capacity that advances the national and international monitoring of development policies and goals." The resources here include various reports on the quality of gathering of data/statistics in individual countries, as well as a database of "statistical capacity indicator" scores. Keep this site in mind when considering different topics for research - it will help you get a sense of where data availability will be a problem for a particular country.

The World Health Organization's gateway to health-related statistics and data. Includes a data repository, country statistics and reports.

In sociology, ASA Style is usually the preferred citation style for bibliographies and in-text citations. However, check with your professor to be sure this is the style they recommend for your work. Sometimes you may be asked to use the APA Style. You can find help in the Purdue OWL, and we have several resources in the Library.
