Unmukti, the Women's Development Centre (WDC) is a space that strives to give contemporary young women a chance to honour their potential to grow into free, fearless, and dignified individuals. All our activities engage with the gendered nature of a range of issues, be it legal, social, economic, or cultural.
Our focus is to provide academic opportunity and skill development along with a variety of planes where we unite co-curricular work with curricular relevance. Various types of activities such as workshops, talks, seminars, screenings are organised. A public meeting per fortnight allows deliberation and devotion by students on topics ranging from body image to domestic violence to sexuality to improving media use and intervention. In addition, we also do other kinds of skill-building with direct practical goals, like self-defense, police procedure and legal redressal.
All members of the Gargi Student Community are free to participate in activities undertaken by the WDC.
However, for membership into the core-team of WDC, one must complete 60 hours of activities (spanning workshops, talks, seminars, screenings, debates, discussions, and field trips).
By being a part of the student community of Gargi College, one is by virtue a part of Unmukti. However, a certificate of membership won’t be issued unless 60 hours are devoted to the center.
The activities are undertaken by an elected student-driven team of “Gender Champions” which is diverse, inclusive, and has candidates from each department. This team works under the mentorship of an appointed teacher committee.
