Ifugao State University (IFSU) has roots dating back to 1920, starting as Nayon Settlement Farm School, founded by American educators to provide basic education and agricultural training. After World War II, it continued to evolve, becoming Ifugao Pilot Opportunity School of Agriculture (IPOSA) in 1959, focused on practical agricultural skills for local youth. Later renamed Payon Bugan Pilot Opportunity School of Agriculture (PBPOSA) to honor the original landowner, it expanded its offerings to vocational courses, marking a steady growth in educational scope.
In 1972, with strong support from local leaders, PBPOSA transitioned into Ifugao Agricultural and Technical College (IATC). By 1982, IATC expanded further into Ifugao State College of Agriculture and Forestry (ISCAF), incorporating multiple campuses across Ifugao and diversifying its programs.
In 2009, the institution was granted university status as Ifugao State University (IFSU) under Republic Act No. 9720, with Dr. Serafin L. Ngohayon serving as its first president. In 2018, Dr. Eva Marie Codamon-Dugyon was appointed as IFSU’s first woman president, a position she continues to hold.
IFSU's commitment to excellence is evident through its accolades. It is ISO-certified and the first state university in the Cordillera to achieve a Bronze Award for reaching Maturity Level II in the Program to Institutionalize Meritocracy and Excellence in Human Resource Management. IFSU has also been recognized globally. In 2024, IFSU further solidified its position, achieving an 801st rank in the UI Green Metric and a significant leap to 174th in WURI worldwide.
In its debut in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking 2024, IFSU ranked 1st among Higher Education Institutions in the Cordillera and Northern Luzon, 2nd nationwide, and 401-600 globally. Additionally, it holds the Philippine Quality Award (PQA) Level II - Proficiency in Quality Management and earned a 3-star rating in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Star Ratings System.
