'“I cannot get over just the sheer value of the community that has been built out of this year,” said [director Ann] Lambert. “Everybody is just so enthusiastic, passionate, talented, and they all bring their very best to every single rehearsal."
"I think when you come to University it's so daunting to join a club and not knowing if you [need] some specific talent [...] to be in a certain club and prove that talent. Unity for Action's whole thing is just come as you are."
Aneen Nicholas, President of Unity for Action
'“I think the people who started the club were looking for a different way to do a fundraiser,” said [President Aneen] Nicholas. “Our whole club is about just using your passion to make change in the world, and so tapping into different talents that everybody has throughout the play like acting, dancing, singing, playing instruments, we’re going to utilize all those talents."
"This year’s musical is about materialism, which allows the group to be funnier than they could have been with more personal topics like domestic abuse. The musical has a classic ‘life-swap’ plot, where a rich, famous woman who is miserable and ungrateful for her celebrity status swaps lives with a regular girl who desires fame and fortune. Over the course of the play, the regular girl discovers that fame and money don’t guarantee happiness, while the celebrity learns to be kind to the people around her and better appreciate them."
"The cast was full of high-energy individuals, and a back and forth dialogue full of funny quips to keep the audience entertained. It also featured upbeat songs and emotional numbers such as “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk The Moon, “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga, and “Give Me Love” by Ed Sheeran."
"Every year, we want to connect with the audience by finding theme that will speak to them. This year, we are sending a message about self-acceptance and being confident in everything you do. Chase your dreams, every single one of them."
Rebecca Mason, Singing it Out Writer and Director
"Unity for Action’s Behind Those Eyes production takes a creative yet effective route to deliver its message about domestic abuse and violence against women."
"The musical features a cast of more than 20 people set in an alternate reality. While watching a television show, the characters find themselves in the show itself and experience reversed gender roles. They incorporate the pop music to illustrate gender issues in a more familiar medium."
"Overall, the show was great. On top of that, we were all united for a good cause which was the Susan Shirley Program, a maternity house that provides resources to young women during their pregnancy and after giving birth as well. They sure made the centre proud, especially by fundraising over two thousand dollars. I truly recommend that you go see other productions that Unity for Action may organize in the future."
"On March 9 and 10, the University of Ottawa’s student-run organization Unity for Action performed “Wake Up,” a play put on not only to raise awareness about bullying but also to raise money for the Migosi Family Hope Society, a charity that provides free education for children in Kisumu, Kenya."
