Player/Team of the week!
Jose Espejo and Brandon Gossage have learned side by side over the last few years, developing not only their chess skills but also a deep passion for the game. What started as a simple hobby has transformed into a driving force in their lives, pushing them to compete, improve, and represent their school with pride. Under the leadership of Jonathan Huerta, their growth has been nothing short of remarkable.
Together, they have helped revive the chess team at Rivera High School, bringing energy, discipline, and a winning mindset back to the program. Their commitment to studying the game, supporting their teammates, and competing at a high level has made a lasting impact on their school and the local chess community. They are not just playing—they are setting a standard.
As they continue to sharpen their strategies and gain experience, they are positioning themselves as serious contenders for the Top Team title at next year's Regionals. The sky is truly the limit for these two, and their journey is a testament to what dedication, teamwork, and strong leadership can achieve. Expect to keep hearing their names—this is only the beginning.
Wish these two luck as they help their team bring home a trophy at High School Nationals in Chicago, Illinois.
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support Rancho Verde Elementary and La Paloma Elementary by purchasing their memberships with the Texas Chess Association. Being able to invest in our local schools and remove barriers for students to compete means everything to us.
This is what community is about — showing up, creating opportunities, and making sure our kids have a seat at the table. When we support our schools, we strengthen the entire chess family. We’re proud to play a small role in helping these students compete, grow, and represent the Rio Grande Valley with confidence.
Let’s keep building. Let’s keep opening doors. ♟️🔥
