In this unit we are all working together a sa big gorup to underatdn how a large-scale product can work, this will take learing auience theory and how to write audience profiles, creating the perfect person for our film, then everyone working together to produce and film a peice of media as a team

Audience profile

Audience profile is the way we target our product to a specific group of people, this can be from age, to type of family and race, and the laungauge they speak.

this can aslo related to VALs. VALs are type of people groups, how we sub-catorgarie types off people and what media they would consume

this being:

the explorer - These people are up for discovering new things in media, often going for whats not mainstream

the main-streamer - this person goes with the flow, often going with what everyone else is

the aspirer - this person asiprers for greater things, often trying to better themelves and sstart buinsess oppurtintys, they would seek films that boost their sefl-steem aand help them get their ideas

the reformer - the reformer is someone who arent tied down by brands and are more inclined to support the small buissness'

the reformer - the resigned are people who have their attitude set in tradition, they seek to strive in life and stay safe.

Script to screen - The script

This is the script for script to screen, the script details are main character having vivid, life like dreams due to a drug he took that being developed by scientists. The drug is un-tested so these vivid dream take him to places and scenarios that seem avan- garde. This script wasnt choosen by us so itll be a different type of project to work on as we arent involved in the story or the characters.

Encoding and decoding - Staurt hall

Stuart hall is a media theorist, he propagated the idea of encoding and decoding,

its a theory that the filmmakers and the audience both have control over the message of the film

Encoding is where the filmmakers have authority over the message they want to send out

these messages are often skewed though, as audience and filmmaaker could have different ideas to wwhat they think everything means

Active Vs Passive audeinces

An active audience engages, interprets and responds to messages and symbols in film/TV shows, and other forms of media, and is capable of challenging the ideas encoded in it. A passive audience is more likely to watch a product and not think too deeply into what they've just seen or question it. They also tend to accept the messages encoded in a media text without challenge and are therefore more likely to be directly affected by the messages.

Blumer & Katz uses and gratification

The idea of Uses and gratifications themselves comes from media serving a purpose to the audience viewing who have needs that need to be fulfilled and they turn to that media as a tool to gratify that need. Certain people want certain things to be fulfilled in their life, so they had separated the audience types into 4 categories, so that people who create the media have a better understanding of an audience

Affective needs- this need fulfils an emotional need from the viewer, a type of product that delivers this is things like soap operas, people often use this to relate the character and their struggles, what the producers who use this theory want the audience to feel is if the character is sad, the audience is sad, the character is happy, the audience is happy.

Cognitive needs – this need fulfils the mental and intellectual needs, this is usually a non-fiction product like the news, giving real facts about the real world, these ty-e of people seek out these to learn and fulfil a nee for information, this can be for work or school or simply to expand their knowledge.

Social integrative needs – this need fulfils the need of socially enjoying something with other people, like watching a film or show with family and or friends, people also use social media to interact with people in this way. Films and TV can spark conversation, and help people get to know others more through watching the show, the show is a secondary object to the social element of this, as people who use it to fulfil this need don’t fully pay attention to the film.

Personal integrative needs – This need fulfils a personal need, for self-respect and to uplift spirits, people who need reassurance in life, these products can range from lifestyle programs that help with diet or workouts, or something that helps with fashion and lifestyle changing.

Hyperdermic needle

Hypodermic Needle Theory is one of the earliest theories formed about how the media influences the audience.

it was developed during the 1920s after some researchers had seen the effects of Orion Wells war of the worlds. The theory suggested that that messages from media are directly inserted into the mind of the viewer, like a needle, it suggest that passive audiences all respond the same way to media.

this is a very outdated theory, as it doesnt allow for alterantive meanings from media, and makes the vewier out to be a close-minded zombie who agrees with everything they read.

My role for Script-to Screen

Job name - sound Assistant

Job description - To help the sound mixer do the on-site sound, using boom pole to record auddio.

I am pleased with the role i got because i want the sound of these to be goo,d the last few timers the sound on the ones we got shown were really sub-par so hopefully this time we can improve it.

the role i got was something i knew i would get so im not upset at all, though i woudlve like something more challenging like a director role

but making sure everything sounds good is a role im fine with.

production i will be holding a boom pole and making sure everything is set right for the sound to be recorded

in pre-production, im ddoing the location recces and risk assesments

in post-production, im doing a second trailer edit for the social media

Production diary - Script to screen

Science test shoot

DATE, TIME, LOCATION- 26/09/23 , Science lab

EQUIPMENT USED - my team weren't on it yet so we didn't uses any sound equipment, i went down to help scope the environment and where sound would be set up

AIMS: What was the aims of the day – to test out the science shoot, see what the set and space looks like and how much space we would have,

WHAT HAPPENED: We tested out all the science equipment we were allowed to use and how the set actually will look, as well as the placements of lights and actors, this would determine how the scene would look,

i think this went really well for a test shoot,, we came to an agreement with how everything was going to be placed and shot, having the behind table have all the science equipment and the table in front have the actors talking, the place we choose was long and allowed us to use a lot of the equipment, a thing that was suggested was to have a fire in the sink besides the actors, but this was turned down for being too dangerous and not showing well on camera.

OUTCOMES: it was quite a successful shoot to demonstrate what we need for sound and for set design. Showed how long it takes to set up and take down, how much space we have and how much crew we'll need, as its a small environment, the lab itself comes with a lot of safety risk and risk with the equipment were using, it being made of glass and some off it being very fragile.

AIMS- film the ball room scene, and have it done by the end off the day.

WHAT HAPPENED- This shoot was the ball shoot we had the drama students dressed up smartly, we were going to have them holds golden rocks, but they weren't done in time and wouldn't work with the choreography. we used the lecture theater so we had the big lights and could make everything look pretty, it took a while for them to get them set up though with the bowling lights as well. The drama students were well practiced and can the choreography down well, the scene looked good and surreal with what we got done, i was really impressed with how it was filmed and how the lighing made everything seem larger and more regal than it actually is. Primarily in this shoot I was helping keep the bottom mic in check and making sure nobody stood on it, standing nearby the camera, though multiple times the gimble camera operator knocked over the mic and made it so it was scuffed audio.

OUTCOMES- We managed to shoot all of ballroom scene, hopefully we didn't need to re-do anything and if we do its minimal and wouldn't need us all back down in the lecture theater
