Narrative Bio
Professor Yung Doug Suh has been educated in Seoul National University (SNU) for his BS/MS/PhD from 1986 to 1999, while fulfilling his korean military duty by doing research at Molecular Reaction Dynamics (MRD) Lab led by Prof. Seong Keun Kim of SNU Chemistry (1988-1999), Spectroscopy Lab led by Prof. Dongho Kim of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) (1990-1994), and Nano Physics Lab led by Prof. Young Kuk of SNU Physics (1994-1999), engaged in the newly started Military Specialist Program of the Republic of Korea Army (Mar.1993-Aug.2000) to fulfill his national military duty.
After doing his PostDoc at the Nano Analysis Lab in the Zenobi Group of the ETH Zurich, Switzerland (1999-2000), he was employed as a Research Assistant Professor at the Chemistry Department of the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Pohang, Korea (2000-2001). He then moved out again to US in late Apr. 2001 to do research as a LTE Staff at the Single Molecule Spectroscopy Lab. in Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory (EMSL) of the Pacific Northwest National Lab. (PNNL) in WA, U.S.A. (2001-2002). After a short stay in the Nanohybrid Co. Ltd., a Drug Delivery Venture Company, as a Chief Research Scientist and Research Information & Planning (RI&P) Director (2002-2003), he was recruited by the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), Daejeon, Korea, to become the youngest Principal Research Scientist at that time of the whole korean national lab, as a special employment initiated by KRICT President. From April 14th, 2003, he has created his own research group from scratch in KRICT, the Laboratory for Advanced Molecular Probing (LAMP) (Apr.2003-Nov.2021). During his KRICT career, he also has been enrolled as a KRICT-SKKU associate professor and then promoted to full professor at the School of Chemical Engineering, SungKyunKwan University (SKKU), Suwon, Korea (Mar.2013-Nov.2021)
Eventually, he was recruited to UNIST as of Nov. 11th, 2021 as a special employment by UNIST President. Recently, he has been also selected as an Associate Director of the Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (CMCM), Inst. for Basic Science (IBS) located inside the UNIST campus since Jan. 1st, 2024. For your interest, UNIST boasts 3 IBS Centers on the same campus including CMCM. These 3 individual UNIST-IBS Centers have started constructing a huge brand new UNIST IBS building on campus since 2022, expecting to complete it in 2026. CMCM will occupy one whole floor out of total four floors, while sharing the ground floor with the other two UNIST IBS Centers to install a series of state-of the-art instruments for each 3 IBS centers. Please take a look at a blog news article on Dec 6th, 2024, interviewed as an Associate Director of the IBS CMCM. It is written in korean but can be translated with a variety of translators or Chat GPT. -> https://m.blog.naver.com/ibs_official/223684834003
