It is the responsibility of those of us in privileged positions to support diversity, equity and inclusive action in STEM and in our local communities. Too often, the burden of change falls on the shoulders of our underrepresented community members, rather than our responsibility to learn about, and making steps towards changes and understanding the issues that occur both in academia and our community that affects the everyday lives of so many people.
As such, we invite you to join our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Journal Club (DEIJC). The clubs will be held on zoom, from 1:00pm-1:45pm, one to twice a month starting on the 11th of November 2020.
This journal club is meant to be informal, but one (or more of us) us will moderate and/or lead the session.
As many people may be not used to or comfortable discussing issues around topics presented in DEIJC, we ask everyone to follow ground rules for our discussion (these have been modified from ones used in the Cal-Bridge program and borrowed from Prof. Annika Peter from Ohio State University):
We ask that you show respect to others and listen to what they have to say. Please pay attention to the power dynamics of the situation, along race, gender, career-stage, and other privilege lines.
Please read about the Oops/Ouch method of responding to the hard situations when you feel like you might have said something hurtful, or if someone says something hurtful to you (https://www.diversityinclusioncenter.com/archives/ouch_files/Archives/Ouch_Vol5No1.html). Grant yourself and others grace in navigating difficult conversations.
We look forward to a productive and powerful discussion, and to the activities emerging from these discussions!
