What to look forward to:
Board Game and Art Days
These sessions are relaxed and free-flowing. Club members will have the freedom to move around freely between stations. These days will be fun because club members will have many opportunities to meet new people and organically form connections with other club members based on their common interests.Â
Valentine's Cookie Party
At this special holiday session, club members will decorate Valentine's Day cookies to celebrate the power of love. Club members will take cookies home to share with their loved ones. At Unified at Iona Prep, we believe that service to others is empowering. In an effort to empower our club members, they will have the opportunity to donate some of their cookies to residents of an assisted living facility.Â
Painting and Pottery PartiesÂ
Our painting and pottery parties will offer a unique sensory experience in which club members can experiment with different supplies to create pieces of art. The objective of our painting and pottery parties is to create a collaborative and exploratory art experience. We want to show our members that art can be a form of self expression. We also want to show them that just like in people, there are no mistakes in art and we can find beauty in differences rather than trying to paint a perfect picture.Â
Ms. Tricia Caracappa (https://www.triciacaracappa.com/) will lead an art lesson that focuses on showing club members that "art isn’t scary or intimidating. It’s an opportunity to be curious and play. It’s a space to trust yourself and know that no matter what happens you can fix it. There are no mistakes in art - just opportunities to see beauty and potential in what’s right in front of you. It’s an absolutely wonderful place to spend time in." Club members will listen to a wide variety of music as they create to see the ways in which different types of music can spark and inspire different parts of us. Club members will also see that anything can be art by creating texture with everyday items like tennis balls, tree branches, and more.
We will kick off Autism Awareness month with Ms. Elissa Carroll (https://www.elissacarroll.com/) as she guides club members through a collaborative experience of creating a blue mosaic. This united art piece aligns with Unified at Iona Prep's objective of creating a more inclusive world. The mosaic will celebrate each member's individuality while showing how we can all stand together for a cause in which we strongly believe.Â
In the style of Muse Paintbar, Iona Prep's own Ms. Denise Horton will teach a step-by-step painting lesson in which students can learn basic acrylic painting techniques such as mixing colors and creating shadows.
Ms. Natasha Moynihan from Iona Prep's Lower School will join us to lead a sensory-focused pottery lesson in which students can experience the power and joy of mindfulness and being present.Â
"Special" Olympic Day
Inspired by Iona Prep's iconic Olympic Day, we will have our own "Special" Olympic Day this season! Like the original, at our Olympic Day, members will be able to participate in a wide array of activities and sports from football to kickball to tug-of-war. What makes our Olympic Day "special" is that all activities will be adapted to fit the needs of our club members.
