The linear accelerator of STAR produces an electron beam of high peak current and high brightness that is used to generate X-ray beams through the Thomson backscatter (or Inverse Compton) process: high-energy photons are produced in the region of interaction between the relativistic electron beam and the laser beam. Since the interaction zone is small, the photon beam that is generated in the interaction has pseudo-spatial coherence, angular divergence of a few milliradians and an energy spread of a few percent.
The mail features of the Inverse Compton - Thomson Backscattering sources are:
•X-ray energy tuneable on a wide range up to hard X-rays
•Controlled Band Width
•Low (controlled) divergence
•Time structure on the ps-scale
•Circular µm-sized x-ray source
•Linear polarization up to 99% - pulse-to-pulse switchable
•Simple evolution to higher energies and fluxes
STAR source operating modes:
high-flux / moderate-monochromaticity for soft-matter and bio-medical imaging;
moderate-flux / monochromatic mode for a better detection/dose performance;
short-and-monochromatic for pump-and-probe experiments.
(Pseudo-)coherence for Phase-contrast imaging and diffraction-enhanced imaging.
