A nurse externship is a temporary work program for nursing students allowing them to gain hands-on clinical experience under a registered nurse.
Nurse externs are able to assist an RN a maximum of once a week, during which they can place and take out IVs. Nurse externs can also pick up LNA shifts on other days of the week.
Nurse externs work as PCTs in the float pool (med-surg, cardiac, PCU). For every two 12 shifts worked as a PCT, you are allowed four hours of paid shadowing in any unit of your choosing. This includes all med-surg and PCU units, ICU, ED, and OR.
