This past fall our students traveled to Erfurt, Germany where they participated in the National Model United Nations conference with university students from around the world. There, the students met with distinguished guests such as German Federal President Steinmeier and activist Kristina Lunz who is a co-founder of the NGO Center for Feminist Foreign Policy. They also attended a number of cultural tours to places like Wartburg castle, Point Alpha, the Stasi Museum, and the Buchenwald Memorial.
President Steinmeier's speech to the students of Model UN and his visit to the committees in the Kaisersaal made headlines throughout Germany. During his time in Erfurt, the President visited the Security Council, the General Assembly, and the International Atomic Energy Agency where he spoke to students about their work in the committees. At the end of the conference the hosts announced that President Steinmeier had requested copies of all the students' passed resolutions so that he may share them with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in their upcoming meeting.
Students also had the incredible opportunity to attend a speakers panel entitled, "Changing Walls into Bridges- is multilateralism the answer" which featured panelists such as Emily Yasmin Norris, Consul for Political and Economic Affairs, U.S. Consulate General Leipzig, Shakuntala Banerjee, Deputy Head, ZDF TV’s Berlin-Based Department of Political Affairs, and Bradley Bowman, Senior Director, Center on Military and Political Power (CMPP) at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
