Undertone Privacy Policy
Effective 4th October 2026
Undertone is a Chrome extension that shows the music in films as a moving display for Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. This policy explains what Undertone does with information. In short: it does its work entirely on your own computer, and it does not collect anything about you.
THE SHORT VERSION - Undertone only listens to a tab's audio after you press Start, and only in the tab you choose. - The audio is analysed on your computer and immediately discarded. It is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. - Undertone does not collect personal information, browsing history, or anything about what you watch. - There are no accounts, adverts, analytics or tracking. - Undertone makes no internet connections of its own.
AUDIO When you press Start, Undertone uses Chrome's tab capture feature to receive the audio playing in that tab. It analyses the sound in real time to work out things like loudness, rhythm, whether music is playing, and the mood of the music. This analysis, including the artificial intelligence model that recognises music and mood, runs entirely inside the extension on your computer. Each moment of audio is held in memory only for the few seconds needed to analyse it, then discarded. Undertone never records audio, writes it to disk, or transmits it. Listening stops when you press Stop, close the tab, or leave the page. Undertone may also check whether the video on the page is muted or turned right down, so it can remind you to turn the volume up. This check happens on your computer, and Undertone does not keep or send this information.
WHAT UNDERTONE STORES: Undertone saves only your display settings, such as the style, size and movement you choose, so they are remembered next time. These are stored using Chrome's built-in extension storage. If you have Chrome sync turned on, Chrome may sync these settings across your devices through your Google account. The settings contain nothing about you or what you watch.
WHAT UNDERTONE DOES NOT COLLECT: Undertone does not collect, store or share personal information such as your name, email address or location; audio or recordings of any kind; the titles, websites or pages you watch or visit; or usage statistics, analytics or crash reports. Because Undertone collects no personal data, none is sold, shared with or transferred to anyone.
PERMISSIONS - tabCapture: to hear the audio of the tab you choose. Chrome asks your permission for this the first time you press Start, and Undertone only listens after you press Start.
THIRD-PARTY COMPONENTS Undertone includes Google's open-source TensorFlow.js library and YAMNet sound-recognition model. Both are bundled inside the extension and run on your computer. They do not connect to Google or anyone else.
CHILDREN Undertone does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect personal information at all.
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY If Undertone changes in a way that affects your privacy, this page will be updated, and the effective date above will change. Undertone will not begin collecting personal information without first updating this policy.
FEEDBACK: The Undertone panel includes optional links to give feedback and to rate Undertone on the Chrome Web Store. The feedback form is a Google Form: if you choose to fill it in, your answers are collected by Google Forms and seen only by the developer. It only includes what you type, and your email address only if you choose to enter it for a reply. If you remove Undertone, Chrome opens a short optional form asking why. Undertone itself never sends any information to these forms; they only receive what you choose to submit.
