UB2023 Schedule

About the conference

Understanding Behaviour 2023 is a conference that aims to bring together researchers interested in studying different aspects of behaviour, ecology and evolution across scales in India. Behaviour is ubiquitous, and can be studied at various levels of organization, from single molecules to populations, using tools as diverse as microscopy, field observations and mathematical modelling. India has a growing community of researchers engaged in understanding nature and natural processes, utilizing the rich biodiversity of the country. Understanding Behaviour 2023 aims to bring together researchers interested in the broad theme of behaviour, encompassing ethology, ecology and evolution, to engage in scientific discussion, and in a community building exercise.

In January 2019, the Behaviour and Ecology Group at IISER Kolkata hosted Understanding Behaviour 2019, which had a participation of about 250, from different parts of the country. A need for such meetings to be held regularly in the country was discussed, and it was suggested that Understanding Behaviour would be organized every two years. However, the pandemic did not allow the plans for UB2021 to see the light of day. The organizers of UB19 are now preparing for UB23, at IISER Kolkata, with the vision of future conferences in this series being organized in other parts of the country in the coming years. The conference will have a plethora of invited and contributed talks, poster sessions and workshops for students. In addition, the organizers hope to organize a local outreach event to create awareness and enthusiasm among school children about biodiversity and sustainability, with the hope of infusing a passion for nature watching among the future citizens of the country.
