The manners and customs of Underland society are strict and strange. Amongst them are:
The intense aversion to any kind of filth in the way of dirt or mold. This is “extremely unseemly” and worthy of immense ridicule. Underlanders are expected to maintain their bodies against decay as much as possible and to always keep their clothing clean.
The insistence upon remaining close to home, especially at night. Anyone found to be roaming the streets, let alone the Marble Fields at night is immediately distrusted or suspected of madness. This is because of two things: the taboo of leaving one’s symbolic resting place for too long and the supposedly constant presence of underwocks in the unprotected wildernesses. Even White Order messengers are not exempt from this standard, expected to hurry as swiftly as possible and duck into outposts overnight.
The heavy scandalization of any sort of romance. Even the word “love” is considered dirty. This is because one’s loved ones have been left behind in the living world, so love in Underland is a betrayal.
The speaking of any language besides Underlish. Underlanders, regardless of their species in life, all are made able to speak a common language upon entering Underland: Underlish. Most knowledge of any other tongue is forgotten quickly once there, but if any fragments remain and are spoken, ridicule will ensue. After all, only the animalistic and bloodthirsty underwocks do not speak Underlish. What does an Underlander’s insistence upon doing the same say about them?
The designation of surnames. No Underlander remembers their name from life, let alone their surname. It is thought strange and pompous to give oneself a surname when choosing what they shall be called.
The common polite and friendly manners of greeting. The polite greeting is to tell others they are looking very well, regardless of their state of decay; however, a common friendly greeting is to tell others they look unwell, which is both jovial and a way to open up discussion about all things going on in their unlife.
