What is Anxiety?
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), Anxiety is defined as, "...an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure."
Medicalnewstoday.com explains that anxiety is a normal thing! Almost everyone has experienced it at some point, but the problem is when you experience anxiety in a disproportionate amount.
Who Is Affected By Anxiety?
Surprisingly, Anxiety is the most common mental illness in the United States! 1 in 8 children (17 and under) and 81.1 of adults are diagnosed with anxiety, but only 36.9% of adults seek help, and the percentage of children that seek help is even lower.
Where Does it Come From?
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety can root from genetics, risk factors, genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.
After much thought and effort, I created a Scratch animation that portrays what it is like to be a student with disproportionate anxiety. You get to see what thoughts are like for most students compared to a student with anxiety. The truth is that you have a choice to get help. There are many resources out there for adults and students to use, but sadly, many of them do not get used.
