Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) are classified as the 3rd sector of the society but are often neglected. This website is about a service - learning project that focuses on coming up with solutions to problems faced by NGOs. The purpose of this project is to propose communication solutions and make the audience aware of the identified community problem. Professional Practice module aims at equipping students to engage with stakeholder communities in order to carry out Public Relations activities and programmes. For my project, I will be working with the NGO named "Jan Hofmeyer Community service (JHCS)" together with my awesome team members. JHCS is a non-racial charity organization located at Vrededorp, Johannesburg; the organization oversees a soup kitchen and a creche. The social issues identified in the community is food shortage/hunger. It is dedicated to serving and caring for mostly children and senior citizens. The social issues of the NGO are hunger, illiteracy and addiction. The NGO provides one well cooked meal per day for five days; the organization also has a creche containing 24 children as it is their joy to see little children pray, learn and have a better future, and life that their parents do not have. It has been in existence for over 20 years and it is still growing. This project will help create awareness by deeply analyzing the Public Relations problems, research findings, solutions to the identified public relations problems and evaluation to see if the project worked or not. Uncovering NGOs means bringing the organization to light and exposing them to the public. I am motivated to help this NGO because I have a passion for helping those in need and my greatest asset is helping corporate brands come up with strategies to solve reputational issues. I believe that “every problem is an opportunity to strive and become relevant”.
My name is Bolatito Agbebi, a Public Relations and communications student at the Department of Strategic Communication at the University of Johannesburg. Professional Practice module will help bring out the skills & potentials hidden within me. I chose to work with JHSC because I grew up in an environment where children hardly eat twice in a day. I believe that vision informs the dream and the dream forms your reality; also, excellence is a result of commitment & dedication. Public Relations is my passion and I advocate for brands by coming up with solutions to problems. I value excellence, hard work and authenticity.
Most importantly, I am a Christian and a proclaimer of the gospel of Jesus. I am what I am, who I am, where I am today by the grace of God.
