UNC Charlotte Summer Reading Camp

Summer 2020

Virtual Reading Instruction

For the entire month of July 2020, the UNC Charlotte Summer Reading Camp staff provided virtual reading instruction 44 children who will be either a 2nd or 3rd grader in the fall. Trained, credentialed teachers from local elementary schools provided 1:1 instructional sessions every day for 30 minutes, using the evidence-based program Sound Partners (Vadasy et al., 2004), published by Voyager Sopris. This explicit, systematic phonics program is designed to support growth in foundational reading skills, including phonemic awareness, letter-sound knowledge, word reading, sight word reading, and reading fluency.
