The Burch Field Research Seminar is a 6-week program through UNC Chapel Hill that takes students to European cities that are considered models of sustainable planning. With the world undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history, students will explore the Smart Cities movement and look at how Europe is becoming a leader in renewable energy. The seminar begins with visits in Freiburg, Germany before moving to The Netherlands and then back to Essen, Hamburg, and Berlin, Germany to close the program.
The 24 students on the program were separated into different groups to focus on different aspects of energy and innovation. For our group's project, we will analyze how a variety of cities in Germany and The Netherlands have redesigned themselves through good forward thinking and urban planning. This interactive website will serve as an education tool for the general public about redesigning old cities, greenfields and brownfields with new aspects of urban planning, rather than the status quo currently embraced across the United States. Explore the interactive maps for location specific information, and read on below the maps for more information on the public policy, urban design, technology, and public health embraced by these cities.
